Dean, Library & Information Access
Gale Etschmaier is the Dean of SDSU’s Library & Information Access where she leads the Library’s efforts to foster an atmosphere of academic innovation.
Dean Etschmaier championed many of the Library’s recent renovation projects, including the newly-opened Library Computing Hub on the 2nd floor of Love Library. Dean Etschmaier recognizes the need for spaces that support diverse research and learning styles; recent Library renovations have provided increased access to quiet study and collaborative study spaces. Her vision for the Library also includes spaces that are technology-rich, multi-purpose, and inspirational. The Library is partnering with other departments on campus to support “Digital Humanities and Global Diversity” one of SDSU’s recently-identified Areas of Excellence. This partnership will eventually lead to the creation of another dynamic space in the Library, one that offers opportunities for students and faculty to learn cutting-edge digital technologies that will transform their scholarship.
Dean Etschmaier is committed to supporting the success of faculty and students at SDSU. In order to support student success, she has pursued an innovative project that will help reduce the cost of their education. She successfully secured funding for a project that makes textbooks for many of the General Education courses available on reserve in the Library. Students now have the ability to check out the general education course reserves for a few hours at a time, thus giving them access to important course textbooks without requiring that they spend hundreds of dollars to purchase them. Dean Etschmaier is also dedicated to supporting faculty research, and in 2015 she secured additional funding to enhance the Library’s collections. These collection enhancements include additional books, databases, and other resources that will support research activities on campus and help SDSU achieve the goal of becoming a top public research university.
Gale has an Ed.D in Higher Education Management from the University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Library Science from SUNY Albany, and a BA in Music from SUNY Stony Brook.
