What is Special Collections?
The Department of Special Collections & University Archives houses rare, fine, unique, and valuable books, periodicals, manuscripts, and documents which require preservation, security and care in handling. Other valuable historical items such as photographs, prints, postcards, memorabilia, scrapbooks, and oral histories are also held in Special Collections. University Archives holds materials which document the history of San Diego State since its founding as a Normal School in 1897.

Anna Culbertson, MA, MSLIS, is a librarian specializing in rare books and special collections.
She provides primary source instruction and research assistance, and curates the library's speculative fiction collections. Her research interests include: history of the book, printing, and graphic design; feminist science fiction, zines and comics; and ideas of utopia in speculative fiction and radical social movements. #critlib

Amanda Lanthorne, MA, MLIS, is the university archivist.
She manages the department's archival collections, provides instruction and reference services, curates exhibits, and really enjoys eating nachos. Her research interests include social history, identity politics, and memory of political violence.

Pamela Jackson, MA, MLIS, is a librarian specializing in popular culture.
She is the subject librarian for Television, Film, Theatre, New Media and the Comic Arts, and co-curator of the Comic Arts Collection in Special Collections. Her job is no fun at all. Her research interests include: comics, critical visual literacy, and the impact of popular culture collections on teaching and learning.

Adam Burkhart is a Library Services Specialist
He handles the day-to-day operations of the department, introduces patrons to the archives and archival procedures and processes duplication orders. Some say he is excessively fond of cats, but that is a subjective judgment open to interpretation by reasonable persons.
